Pickleball can be played as singles or doubles on a badminton sized court with a low net, similar to tennis but slightly smaller. It’s suitable for all ages and abilities, so great for families, clubs and competitive players.
The court is divided into two service boxes and a non-volley zone near the net, known as ‘the kitchen’. This area is key to the game as players can’t volley (hit the ball in the air) while standing in it, so it’s all about strategy and placement rather than power.
With a mix of tennis, badminton and table tennis pickleball is fast paced but very accessible. Using a solid paddle and a plastic ball with holes players have dynamic rallies that require quick reflexes, precision and smart tactics. The game has specific rules to ensure fair play and competitive balance such as the double bounce rule which means longer rallies and more fun.
As more clubs, leisure centres and sports facilities are introducing pickleball courts across the UK now is the time to get a paddle and give it a go. Whether you want a fun social activity or a new sport to master pickleball is the one!
