Patchy grass can be the cause of so much stress. Especially when coming into warmer months with longer days, we all want to be out in the garden. Whether it’s BBQs, garden parties, relaxation, or family time. Whatever your reasoning, if you have a garden, this is the time of year we want to be in it and even invite friends and family into it too.
However, if your grass (or garden) is patchy and messy, not only do you not want to use it, but it can be distressing too. Your home is something you should be proud of, a garden is part of a home and we should all have pride in ours. That’s why patchy grass is a problem, you want to look outside and be excited, not wanting to close the curtains.
Patchy Grass Causes
Patchy grass is not something we want to deal with. We may have no choice, let’s take a look at some of the causes of patchy grass. Maybe we can sort it out quickly if you resonate with any of the below problems.
Bad Drainage
Even in warmer months, the UK can still get a lot of rain. If your garden has poor drainage, this can cause standing water in areas leaving your garden full of muddy patches due to flooding. Having bad drainage is especially a nightmare if you have children or pets wanting to use the garden. Moreso for pets, it’s not like you can stop them using the grass.

Children Playing
We love our children, and if we have a garden, we love them to use it (and love using it together). A lot of play on the grass can leave dead spots or muddy patches in the grass. No one wants to stop their children using the garden because it’s muddy, but we also don’t want that being brought into the house. It’s not nice to look at a patchy garden either.
Pets Wreaking Havoc
Pets need the outdoors. We can’t take that from them, however, they can make gardens a mess. If your pet uses the same spot to do their business, this can cause uneven growth or dead spots. A lot of pets also love to run the same pattern in gardens, leaving a path of mud that slowly gets worse overtime.
Heavily Shaded
Having a garden that has areas of shade and areas that see a lot of sun can give an uneven growth pattern to your lawn. The shaded area can also become over-un with moss due to perfect conditions for it to grow, especially if it’s got poor drainage and holds the water.
Patchy Grass Solutions
Re-Grass
Your simplest option would be to rip up all of the old turf and replace it with new turf. This is a simple and cost-effective option. If you have bad drainage, before you put down the new turf, you can ass some drainage under the garden.
If your only issue is bad drainage, this may be perfect for you. However, if any of the other aforementioned causes align with you, this may not be the best fix. It may seem fine at first, but it will revert to the same patchy garden after a short amount of time (in most cases).
Protect what you have
Time-consuming, but it may work for some. There are so many videos on YouTube and TikTok about lawn maintenance. You can learn a lot and spend your time maintaining and looking after your grass. This way it will stay neat and green (if you do everything right for your grass).
Upgrade Your Garden
If you have no option to save your lawn, it may be time for an investment in your outdoor space. It may have a high initial cost compared to some other options, but in the long run, the benefits are worth the money. It’ll reduce your garden-barrassment too.
Our number one suggestion is to remove the turf and change to artificial grass, if you have bad drainage, we can add that in too. Artificial grass is a low-maintenance, and pet-friendly way to give your garden new colour and life that stays that way for many years to come. We can upgrade your grass and transform your entire outdoor space, decking, patios, fencing, and more. Give your house (and self) the garden it deserves. Get in touch today, you won’t regret it.
