Can you put artificial grass on a roof or balcony
Artificial Grass on a balcony

You may be looking out your window over an ugly flat roof wondering if there is anything you can do about it to make it look beautiful. You may have even thought about using artificial grass for low maintenance, which looks nice too. Well, artificial grass is a solution you can use, and in this post, we will outline do’s and don’ts when installing artificial; grass on a flat roof or balcony.

First of all a lot of people ask if this is possible, or would we recommend doing so. We say it is possible, and we also would recommend it. We’ve installed it on people’s roofs and balconies many times. Each time, the customer is overjoyed with having a nice view out their window, or something nice underfoot on their balcony.

How to secure it down

When installing artificial grass on a roof or balcony, you don’t want to secure it down the same as you’d secure it on the ground. If you are drilling into your roof, a lot of problems such as dampness and leaks can come from this. In addition, if you decide to remove the grass, the leaks and dampness will be made worse by having a hole in your roof.

So with that being said, how can you secure artificial grass on a roof? We suggest weighing the grass down with something around the edges. There are many options to use for this, some better and some worse. Large stones are a good way and also won’t require any additional maintenance from your end. They have to be heavy and on all the corners to ensure the grass won’t go anywhere.

The second option that would require some maintenance is plants. We’d suggest unless you can get on to the roof easily or use artificial plants. This option is best used for balconies as plants require maintenance. You’d also want some decent-sized plants with some weight to them to not let the grass blow away.

If it’s a balcony, you can also place some garden furniture on the artificial grass. Assuming the balcony is structurally strong and can take the weight as garden furniture can get heavy. The last thing anyone would want is their balcony falling.

Grass choice

When choosing your grass, there are a few things to consider. This is due to the style you are after, but also its practicality being used on a roof. You want the grass you choose to have exceptional drainage and not hold lots of water otherwise this may cause the roof to leak.

All artificial grass nowadays is fitted with drainage holes and the backing lets water pass through easily. The density of grass can heavily affect how long it takes for the water to drain. Water will hold a bit longer than natural grass or the roof, but it won’t get stuck and go stagnant in the grass pile. You’ll just need a little more patience.

Now with that being said, which grasses are good? Well, this is our preference for the look, but the density of the grass can be found out by contacting our team.
